Wineries, Breweries and Tasting Rooms

Since the first vineyards were planted in 1973, the Long Island wine region has continued to grow, from 17 vineyards in 1996 to 35+ today. There are some 40 licenced wineries currently operating on Long Island, producing 500,000+ cases of premium wine from over 20 classic vinifera grape varieties.

With just 3,000 acres under cultivation, the focus in Long Island is on quality, not quantity. East End viticulturists personally tend their vines throughout the long growing season to yield grapes of the highest quality. Our local winemakers are true artisans, carefully crafting wines that meet exacting standards for structure and balance. With this approach, it is no surprise that Long Island wines receive high praise from some of the wine industry's best known critics.

In recent years the North Fork has become home to award-winning Breweries, Cider Mills and Distilleries too. In addition we feature tasting rooms that focus on these locally crafted beverages.

Please enjoy responsibly.

Greenport Harbor Brewing Co., Greenport

WE MAKE EVERY DROP OF GREENPORT HARBOR BEER IN TWO SMALL CRAFT BREWERIES AT THE VERY END OF LONG ISLAND.

The idea began a long time ago, over... well... a pretty terrible beer. You see we (John from NY and Rich from Boston) met in college and had to drink what beer we could afford in those days. As the years went on, the better the beer we consumed, the more we were consumed by it. We learned everything about beer. We tasted it, studied it, and brewed it- all in pursuits of one day starting our own brewery.

Today we have two brewing locations on Carpenter Street in Greenport and a bottling plant/tasting room in Peconic. You can find our beer in bottle & on-tap across Long Island and New York City and have extended distribution into Upstate New York and Connecticut this past Spring.

Our beers have been featured in the Village Voice, Newsday, TimeOutNY, and the Wall Street Journal amongst others.

Thank you to all of our families, friends, supporters as well as the Village of Greenport for helping us fulfill our dream.

Harbes Vineyard

For over 12 generations the Harbes Family has been tilling the fertile soils of Long Island.  In 2003 their vineyard was planted on a boulder-strewn, south-facing hill near the coast of the Long Island Sound. On the surface is fine sandy loam, but underneath is a layer of rocks and silt, ideal for producing great vines. With the careful attention of vineyard manager Edward Harbes IV, the vines are producing among the best wines on the North Fork. The Harbes Family strives to capture the best of farm and family and welcomes you to enjoy the fruits of their labor.  Visit www.harbesfamilyfarm.com for hours and more information.

Macari Vineyards and Winery, Mattituck

Macari Vineyards, located on the North Fork of Long Island in Mattituck, New York, is owned and operated by the Macari Family. The Macari family has owned the 500-acre waterfront estate for over fifty years, though Macari Vineyards was not established until 1995. In June 2009, the Macari family opened a second tasting room located on the Main Road in the town of Cutchogue, adding twenty acres of vines to their vineyard.

The Macaris are careful environmental stewards of the land − what was once potato fields has been transformed to a 200 acre vinegarden with additional fields of compost and fallow farmland. Macari Vineyards is also a home to Texas longhorns, Spanish goats, Sicilian donkeys, horses, ducks and rabbits. Alongside acres of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viogner, Grüner Veltliner, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Pinot Gris, Pinot Meunier and Syrah, members of the Macari team frequently spot blue herons, red tail hawks, vultures, ospreys, eagles, red foxes and groundhogs. The biodiversity of the Macari family farm provides an extraordinary grape growing environment that yields some of the finest fruit on the East Coast.

Joseph Macari Jr. is considered to be a pioneer in the movement towards natural farming on Long Island through his adoption of biodynamic principals since the vineyard’s first plantings. Extensive soil preparation, a rich composting program, meticulous cover cropping and a passionate respect for wildlife creates a distinctive place for Macari’s 200 acres of vines to thrive.

The Macari family is proud to showcase a collection of world-class wines from the emerging North Fork region.

North Fork Tasting Room

The North Fork Tasting Room, located in the Hamlet of Baiting Hollow/Roanoke, North of Riverhead, resides in the restored 100 year old Zdunko barn. (The Lobster Roll Northside occupies the original farmhouse.) It features a beautifully decorated taproom that serves gourmet appetizers, a tapas menu, unique flat breads, and “farmhouse” sandwiches. It also provides several private areas and an outdoor fireplace and conversation pit for cool nights.

The “Tasting Room” is unique in its ability to offer the majority of wines from most East End wineries by glass or flights, in addition to microbrews from most of the local craft breweries. It is the only facility on the East End licensed to do so. With the Lobster Roll Northside restaurant next door, and utilizing Terry’s passion for fresh local ingredients (think Buffalo Meatball Hero’s, Collard Cakes, Peconic Bay Scallop Ceviche), the menu is more extensive than the norm. It is a popular destination for wine, beer and local food aficionados and a popular starting point for bridal parties and small tour groups, who often revisit at the end of the day when the music starts and Terry leaves his adjacent gingerbread factory and roams around the tasting room giving away his latest “experimental” creations. It’s a ‘one of a kind’ experience!
