Greenport Maritime Festival

September 21-23

The 23rd Annual Greenport Maritime Festival will be hosted by The East End Seaport Museum & Marine Foundation in partnership with The Village of Greenport. This year’s Festival will have a strong maritime theme. In the heart of the village, Front and Main Streets will be only open to pedestrians and there will be a strong nautical presence. The US Coast Guard Training Braque EAGLE, the Zaida, a 75 year old sailing vessel used to locate German U-Boats in WWII, will be available for viewing and the Lynx, interpretation of an actual 1812 privateer ship will be available for sail-a-ways. Various historical sites will be open to the public; The East End Seaport Museum, the Railroad Museum, the Old Greenport Jail, the Blacksmith’s Shop and the Little Red Schoolhouse, etc.
We begin on Friday evening, September 21st with a Land and Sea reception sponsored by the Greenport Harbor Brewery. This lively get-together offers a splendid venue to showcase the fruits of local waters paired with local foods, wines and champagnes as well as beer from the Greenport Harbor Brewery.
On Saturday, at 11 AM, the festival begins with the parade, which we expect to be as spectacular as last year’s. This will be followed by the traditional blessing of the waters by the Greek Orthodox Church in Greenport. Local Restaurants will be serving their delicious fare, and the Chowder Contest on Sunday offers visitors an opportunity to vote for the best Chowder from their kitchens. In the afternoon there are events for all ages, from Captain Kidd’s Alley (children’s events) to the Kayak Derby, music on Front and Main Streets and the Street Vendors. The Kings of the Coast Pirate Troupe will offer an interactive, live-action, family-oriented experience, bringing all the color, excitement and fun associated with the much-romanticized Golden Age of Piracy. Festival participants will have the opportunity to visit our lighthouse, hear its stories and experience its panoramic views. Two excursions are planned for the weekend at 4 PM each day. Call or stop by the Museum as registration is required. The annual Greenport Maritime Festival is the principal fundraising activity of the East End Seaport Museum & Marine Foundation. All proceeds go toward the maintenance of Long Beach Bar “Bug Light” Lighthouse, Maritime Exhibits and Educational Programs for the local Youth. Please mark your calendars for this fun family event in beautiful, historic Greenport!
